Digital Detox Challenge

I think most people would agree our relationship with social media and the internet in general has become unavoidable. Our fingers cannot help but slide to unlock and our thumbs slither uncontrollably over that favorite social app.

Let’s plunge into a challenge of taking time out for our mind and body. Make a shift from the smart phone screen to the cinema of real lives &  your surrounding world. Like a detox program, it may seem unachievable, however we’re not going cold turkey with this, just a couple of small steps to nourish ourselves. It is time to time to take a step back in order to embrace the next step forward and don’t let the illusion of FOMO (fear of missing out!!) get in your way.

Here are small things you can do to nurture yourself web-free during the day or week.

Unplug for at least an hour a day

Use this opportunity to practice a Yoga session or take a soothing bath or read your favorite book. Have the phone on airplane mode to avoid any temptation. Book a no-phone half day spa if you fancy self-care in this way.

Go device-free at meals

Spend quality time with your food. What you eat is what you are.  By practicing mindful eating, you will relish your food more thereby improving digestion. This way you can exercise better food choices and be aware of the quality & quantity of consumption.

Plan at least one holiday a year just for yourself

It could be a yoga holiday or a hiking trip or a detox retreat. Disable all push notifications on social media apps during this time. Tell your work colleagues and friends that you are on a digital detox and will be available only at a certain time frame. This way they’ll be less likely to contact you in the first place and you can then allocate a desired time during your day to share your fun experiences on social media.

Don’t worry about missing out

You can browse through your news feed to catch up at different intervals in the day. Checking the feed every 10 minutes to stay updated is not an essential life enhancing experience. If you desire to follow your beloved persons work, you can always run through their feed individually. Notice and be observant as to how many times you refresh your news feed and analyze if you can decrease it slowly.

It is best to observe & conduct these experiments for yourself. And you’ll soon realize that you’ll have so much time to spend on other fun filled activities that bring happiness and enrich your life in beautiful ways. Get your detox ON. Give it  try this week. xx
